Have you got sensitive files on your computer you want kept away from prying eyes? Perhaps its a secret family recipe passed down for generations? Perhaps its sensitive company documents that cannot fall into competitors hands? Whatever files it is you want to protect, you can now do it easily and securely with TrueCrypt.

Today, I will teach you to use TrueCrypt to protect these sensitive files.

Download and Install TrueCrypt

Download TrueCrypt at http://www.truecrypt.org/downloads.php.

Run the setup and keep all the default settings.

Once completed, run TrueCrypt.

Creating a Volume

To use TrueCrypt, you will need to create a new volume. This volume will act as a virtual disk that will contain all your sensitive files.

TrueCrypt - Main

Click on Create Volume. Choose to create a standard volume.

For the Volume Location, you will need to select where your volume will be created. Just select any folder, and create a file without an extension (you could create one with any extension if you want to). For example, you can try C:\sensitivedata as your Volume Location.

For Encryption Options, just keep all default settings.

The volume size is how huge you want your virtual disk to be. For example, if you create a 100MB volume, you will only be able to store 100MB worth of sensitive data. Enter as much as you want, as long as you’ve got the hard disk space.

Next, you’ll have to select a password. Feel free to select any password you want, and keep the other options unchecked.

For Volume Format, just keep all default options and click Format to create your volume. If everything runs properly, you will be notified that the TrueCrypt volume has been successfully created.

Mount Your Volume To Store Your Sensitive Data

Back in the TrueCrypt main screen, click on Select File to select your volume. If you created your volume at C:\sensitivedata earlier, just enter C:\sensitivedata into the volume text box.

Next, select the drive alphabet that the volume will be mounted to. Most likely, Z: is not used on your computer, so go ahead and select Z:.

When you are ready, click on Mount, and enter your password. If mounted successfully, you will see that Z: now points to C:\sensitivedata in the TrueCrypt main screen..

Open My Computer, and look for Z:
